The San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish located in Tierra Verde Homes, Bgy. Culiat, Tandang Sora, Quezon City was established on August 15, 1987. Its feast day is the Sunday nearest to September 27.
Before the San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish came to be, the residents of Barangay Culiat celebrated masses in a small chapel on the grounds of Culiat High School under the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. Eugenio E. Robles.
In 1983, a group called the Prime Movers spearheaded the construction of a building that served as the new place of worship for the growing community. Also in this year, several residents got together to help put up the resources such as the land and funding for the new Church and its Council.
By May 8, 1983, the first Sunday Mass was held at the new Church of the Resurrection. The first Parish inaugural mass was held on February 12, 1984 at the old chapel in Culiat High School, the old site of The Church of the Resurrection officiated by Fr. Thomas Nechikat, O.S.A. Funding for the chapel, sacristy, office and convent followed thereafter.
When Fr. Thomas left the country, Fr. Lauro “Larry” Toledo replaced him as parish priest. On August 21, 1987, the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) requested Msgr. T. Ramirez for a new Patron Saint. The new parish was eventually renamed San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish (SLRP) in honor of the first Filipino Saint.
On September 4, 1987, during the high mass celebrated by the late Jaime Cardinal Sin, the Decree was read naming the church San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish which covered 42 areas. Fr. Larry was installed as the first parish priest. Mandated organizations like the Mother Butler Guild, Apostleship of Prayer, Legion of Mary, Knights of Columbus, Marriage Encounter, and others were formed afterwards. On March 11, 1990 through the initiative of the Knights of Columbus, a ceremony was held for the creation of a bigger, more beautiful SLRP Church.
The succeeding Parish Priests were Fr. Rolando “Rollie” Petronio (1994-1996), Fr. Percival “Val” de Vera (Nov. 15, 1996-Feb. 15, 1997), Fr. Alex Ver (Oct. 2000-June 2001), Fr. Nelson Orqueta (June 2001-Sept. 2002), Fr. Emmanuel “Pong” del Rosario (Sept. 2002-June 2007), Fr. Bienvenido “Luke” Dobles (June 5, 2007-June 2013). Fr. Juan Bosco Abellana took over after the Clergy Reshuffle in June 2013.
During Fr. Nelson’s tenure, the decree dividing the Archdiocese of Manila into six dioceses took effect. The 36 areas to the left of Tandang Sora Avenue were placed under the Diocese of Cubao while the remaining six areas to the right side of Tandang Sora Avenue were placed under the Diocese of Novaliches.
Meanwhile, there were many visible changes, projects, and reforms implemented in the parish under the stewardship of Fr. Pong. First among these was the beautification of the church which included the Baptistry and the Altar of San Lorenzo Ruiz that were erected and blessed by Bishop Soc Villegas in September 2003.
Fr. Luke’s thrust on “being Church” led to activities that helped develop the spirituality of the parishioners. In August 2008, the parish launched its Sunday School Catechetical Classes to inculcate the basic church teachings to children. Father Luke also brought order to the finances of the parish where strong control and disciplined management of expenses helped pay off the parish debts in a year’s time.
