We, people of faith and citizens of the Republic of the Philippines, wish to publicly manifest our strong and unwavering support for Most Rev. Teodoro Bacani, Jr., Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Novaliches, Most Rev. Socrates Villegas, Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan, Most. Rev. Honesto Ongtioco, Bishop of Cubao, Most Rev. Pablo Virgilio David, Bishop of Caloocan, and hereby guarantee their standing as good and responsible citizens of this country as well as faithful members of communities of faith.
We believe that the above named persons are innocent and that the accusation made by one known for making ambivalent statements simply cannot be countenanced.
We believe that honest declarations of opinions while not being threats or obstructive but rather responsible and constructive, are a healthy sign of a true democracy at work within our country. We believe that justice, peace, security and prosperity for all citizens regardless of religions and politics are best ensured by such a democracy where human rights, and particularly the right of free speech, are respected, protected and promoted.
We believe that Bishop Bacani and his companions have simply been exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights to free speech and that their public statements often misconstrued as opposed to certain government policies are but mere expressions of responsible citizenship and genuine concern for the common good, compassion for the weak and solidarity with the poor.
We believe that every Filipino citizen has a constitutionally guaranteed right to freely express concerns and opinions, as their consciences dictate for as Jesus Christ himself said: “The truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).
We, therefore, in line with the Preamble of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, “imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society, and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity, the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace,” herewith make our stance known by all.
