Remember and realize are two words the Most Rev. Mylo Hubert Vergara, D.D., outgoing Chair for the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Episcopl Commission on Social Communications (CBCP ECSC), focused on during the final day of the 5th National Catholic Media Convention held in Shercon Resort and Ecology Park, Mataas na Kahoy, Batangas last August 9, 2019.

“God tells us to always remember,” reminded the Bishop of God’s saving love during his Homily for the final Mass of the said event. He said remembering will help one to keep going especially when encountering life’s crossroads.

He shared how he was afraid of the Media before he took over CBCP ECSC and most especially when he became its head since he had no background on it considering he was a formator and that he came from the Commission on Seminaries.

“But six years have passed and the consistent reminder of the Lord is, ‘Remember Me’,” he revealed, “‘Whatever task I give you, I will always be there. My saving Love will conquer’.”

Lifting from the day’s Gospel on the Lord’s instruction for discipleship (“whoever wishes to come after Him must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me”), the Bishop highlighted this as everone’s mandate especially members of the Social Communications Ministry.

“(The) Media Ministry–as we will want to evade it, elude it, escape it–is really a Paschal mystery,” Bishop Vergara underscored.

He stated that Catholic Communicators must realize their path as the path of the Cross that ends with the resurrection. He stressed that this is very true now since Catholic Media currently experiences challenging times–“where many do not only not listen but also criticize”.

He cited the developments in the Commission for the past six years and how it has grown through the dedication and commitment of its members and the fulfillment of being prophets in their own little way.

“Yes we will suffer, yes we will die, but together with Christ we will rise,” he ended.

It was during the said Holy Mass that the Most Rev. Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr., D.D. of Boac received the standarte of the CBCP ECSC from Most Rev. Mylo Hubert Vergara, D.D. as a simple turnover rite of its leadership.

The 5th National Media Convention was attended by almost 200 delegates from different dioceses and Catholic media organizations all over the Country. This year’s theme was, “Ala Eh! Kita Dine!”, since the event was hosted by the Archdiocese of Manila. (~Marianne Tenorio)
