The Most Reverend Leopoldo Jaucian, SVD, Bishop of Bangued, urged the Youth to follow the example set by the Blessed Virgin Mary in his Homily during the Eucharistic Celebration that opened the second day of the 6th Philippine Conference of New Evangelization (PCNE 6) held at the University of Santo Tomas last July 20, 2019.
“Focus on the life and example of Mary our supreme model, not only how to discern the will of God for us, especially in taking good care of the young,” advised the outgoing Chair of the Catholic Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on the Youth (CBCP ECY) to those present in the venue’s Quadricentennial Pavillion on how to face fear.
He said by following the example of Mary who gave her “yes” to the Lord. He also reminded those present in the venue that Mary is simply not just an image to offer flowers to. He stressed that she is part of our journey in life.
Bishop Jaucian shared his journey with the Youth. He said that when he was assigned in Abra, he would travel far by foot for hours to a community. When they reached the village, he was touched at the sight of young boys playing the gongs and young girls wearing headlamps on their heads, which provided light for visitors coming to them.
He likened the warm welcome as the giftenedness and creativity of the young people as “the music, the sound that gives life for the Church” and “their freshness becomes light that gives hope for the Church.”
Addressing all the young people, he stressed that they are “the treasure of the Church, the joy of the Church and the power of the Church.”
Bishop Jaucian weeped when he shared his life and vocation story that revolved around his hardships from being an impoverished boy from Tarlac to becoming an altar server where he found his vocation to the priesthood.
Looking back at the blessings he received in life, he exclaimed, “Isang sacristan, puwede palang maging obispo. All because I was able to open my life to the grace, to the love of God And Mary helped me.”
The 6th Philippine Conference on New Evangelization started last July 18, 2019 through a Day of Recollection with the Clergy and Religious. It officially opened its first day to the Public, called PCNE For All, on July 19, 2019. (~Shirly Benedictos)
