The Laity’s role in this Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons was stressed during the first in a series of Renewed Servant Leadership Forums of the Diocese of Novaliches Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) held at the St. Peter Parish Shrine of Leaders along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City last January 25, 2018.

According to the forum’s speaker, Rev. Fr. Antonio Abuan, MS–a BEC advocate and community builder himself, the Laity share the same mission with the Clergy and Consecrated Persons.

“You are our partners. You give light to others on the Word of God,” emphasized Fr. Abuan in Filipino to the members of BEC that filled the Parish’s Palace of the Rock.

Tackling the Forum’s subject, “Deepening ‘The Year of the Clergy and Consecrated/Religious Persons,’ he commended BEC’s role in spreading the word of God through their effective cathechetical activities. He focused on God’s threefold command, as well as, the earthly missions of Jesus Christ as Priest, King and Prophet. He explained that this command applies to all–Clergy, Religious, and Laity.

“Each one of us is called by God,” he added, “and He mandated us to go forth to preach, baptize, and make disciples of all nations.”

He specified the roles of the Clergy as spiritual, servant and pastor/community leader. Such roles complement what the BEC does for the Diocese and the community it serves.

Prior to Fr. Abuan’s talk, Diocesan BEC Director Rev. Fr. Antonio Dela Cruz welcomed members to the forum and briefed them on the importance of the topic.

“It is important to understand the meaning of the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons so that our service in the Church will have meaning,” he stated.

The participants were then, as ice breaker and topic introduction, asked to share their thoughts on the question: “Ano ang ibig sabihin sa ‘yo ng mala-pari, mala-hari at mala-propeta?” (What does priestly, kingly and prophet mean to you?)

After the talks, the participants aired their learnings for the day and how these will help in fulfilling their mission. They were likewise tasked to rate the forum’s topic and relevance to their being BEC members and/or leaders.

The BEC Nova Renewed Servant Leadership Forum is a monthly gathering of its members to tackle different topics in line with the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons. The next forum will tackle, “Social ills–Eye Openers–General Idea”. (~Lulu Reclusado-Nario)
