In its effort to help establish the Media Ministry in the parish level, the Diocese of Novaliches’ Social Communications and Media Ministry (SocComm Nova) held the “Write Right 4 Christ” and the “Snapshots 4 Christ” Seminars at the Diocesan Building in Fairview Park, Quezon City last May 7 and May 20, 2016, respectively.

The two seminars are opportunely held in the month the Universal Church celebrates World Communications Day, which was last May 8, 2016, during the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ. With this year’s World Communications Day theme entering on “Mercy and Communication”, the SocComm Nova Seminars are a reminder of the importance of communication in establishing merciful encounters in the Parish level through the fields of Journalism and Photography.

In fact, one of Snapshots 4 Christ’s Speaker, Mr. Julius Panday, passionately emphasized the role of Social Communications in lieu of the Church Fathers’ call for renewed evangelization, stating that, “Social Communications is important to the Catholic Church because it can convey and promote the Gospel Truths to form Public opinion.” A truly important role e.

This is a very relevant role every Catholic should take upon him/herself considering the influx of information readily-accessible online these days–especially in Social Media–are not oftentimes truthful and can easily draw Catholics away from Gospel Truths.

Staggering statistics show that 37% of Catholics go to Church on Sundays while 97% of Internet users in the Philippines or 44M Filipinos go to Facebook (as per GMA Online Data January 2016), where Satanists and Freethinkers or Aetheists have also setup accounts with the aim of destroying the Catholic Church and Her teachings. Establishing the Media Ministries in the Parishes, therefore, would be a great help to bring back the Sheep into the Fold and to answer the call of Church Fathers for renewed evangelization.

Capturing Beauty & Truth Visually
Aside from highlighting the evangelizing role of Social Communications, Panday, a professional photographer specializing in Street Photography for more than a decade, gave an introduction on Photo Journalism before he delved on its guiding principles. He cited commonly-practiced norms in the Industry when it comes to capturing photographs while in the field aside from mentioning what the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) says about it.

Panday’s talk, “Introduction To Photo Journalism”, is actually the second part of the Snapshots 4 Christ Seminar. The first part being the “Basics of Photography” conducted by multi-awarded MY Camera Club member Rev. Fr. Noel “Noi” Azupardo during the morning session of the Seminar. Fr. Noi gave an extensive talk on the technicalities of Photography from the various types of cameras to the principles of light and rules of composition.

According to Fr. Noi, it has become his advocacy to teach Photography to help people maximize the use of their gadgets and equipment, which is a form of stewardship. This is why the first thing he taught and repeatedly highlighted during the seminar is the need to read the camera’s manual, something Filipinos are not very fond of doing.

Fr. Noi, Parish Priest of San Isidro Labrador Parish, Tandang Sora, Q.C. and member of the Diocese of Novaliches’ Curia as Vicar for the Clergy and Board of Consultors, showcased his masterpieces as a point of reference for what he is teaching while the participants engaged in an activity that required them to apply what they learned during his talk.

In synthesis, SocComm Nova Director Rev. Fr. Ambrosio Nonato Legaspi reminded participants to treat cameras like one’s “third eye”–tools to capture the beauty of God’s creation and to celebrate what’s right in the world.
