Dio Nova Welcomes “Inang Desay” On Immaculate Solemnity

The Diocese of Novaliches launched the devotion to Mary, Untier of Knots last December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, through a Holy Mass concelebrated by the Bishop, Most Rev. Antonio R. Tobias, D.D., and members of the Clergy at Kristong Hari Parish in Commonwealth, Quezon City.

Mimicking the painting of an unknown artist in Germany’s Church of St. Peter, the Holy Mass began with a parade of children dressed as angels holding onto a white rope tied to the carriage of the Blessed Virgin, who wears a grayish-blue and white simla and holds a knotted blue-white ribbon.

Diocese of Novaliches Chancellor Fr. Rey Percival Flores then read the circular of the Bishop regarding the devotion, which, through the Commission on Youth and in line with the Year of the Eucharist and the Family, is expected to enliven the Faith of the Youth and their families.

The Bishop, in his homily, gave a simple yet beautiful explanation of the reason behind this new devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He said, “Nung maliit ako at nagkakabuhol-buhol ang tali ng sapatos ko, tatakbo ako sa nanay ko sasabihin ko, ‘Nay! ‘Nay! ‘Nay! Tanggalin mo nga ang buhol ng sapatos ko, hindi ko makalag eh.” (“When I was little and my shoe laces were knotted terribly, I’d run to my mother and say, ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Please undo the knots of my shoe laces, I can’t unknot it.”)

He then went on to say that, similarly, Mary will be able to undo the knot in our lives. Thus, the devotion to Mary, Undoer or Untier of Knots, which the Diocese introduces in the local tongue as “Maria, Tagakalag ng mga Bohol ng Buhay“. However, the Bishop said he would like people to refer to her as Inang Desay to make it easy to refer to her.

According to the Bishop, the knots in our lives are born from sin–those we commit and those committed by people we love, such as parents separating that result to knots in the lives of their innocent children.

He said that the the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception was specifically chosen to introduce the devotion to Inang Desay because this day commemorates Mary conceived free of sin. The Bishop cited God’s promise in the Book of Genesis (Gen 3:15) through the Immaculate Virgin Mary who will wage war against Satan to liberate us from sin beginning with Her Son, Jesus Christ.

Inang Desa, Inang Desay

The historical launching of the devotion to “Maria, Tagakalag ng mga Bohol ng Buhay” would not be possible without the generosity of Ms. Lilia Lansangan, who owns the image and which happens to be the only one of its kind in the Philippines. Lansangan was actually introduced to Kristong Hari Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Lando Jaluag after she joined the Marian procession where she met a seminarian having his apostolate in the said Parish.

A native of Bulacan, Lansangan was present during the launching and was appreciative of the Bishop’s support for the devotion, especially in fondly calling the image of Mary Untier of Knots as Inang Desay after the Bulaceños’ Inang Desa.

Lansangan’s “Maria, Tagakalag ng mga Bohol ng Buhay” is actually a Filipino representation of the red-and-blue doned Our Lady Undoer of Knots that came from the meditation of St. Iraneaus, who was the Bishop of Lyon before he was martyred in 202.

The Devotion

Prior to the Holy Mass, devotees of the Our Lady Undoer of Knots gave testimonies at the Kristong Hari Parish. Devotees like Fr. Luciano Felloni and Fr. Lando Jaluag, attest to the effectivity of the devotion in helping solve life’s “hopeless” problems such as unending financial difficulties and repeated misunderstandings in the family.

Novena cards to “Maria, Tagakalag ng mga Bohol ng Buhay” were given out to attendees upon registration to promulgate the devotion and make people aware that there is a way to end these “hopeless” circumstances in life.

Through the launching, the Kristong Hari Parish will now serve as the Diocesan site for the devotion to Mary Untier of Knots. As such, Kristong Hari Parish will hold the novena for Inang Desay every Thursdays of the month. Meanwhile, a mass and procession will be held every 8th of the month at 6pm.

The devotion to Mary Untier of Knots recently became famous through Pope Francis who advocated it at the beginning of his Pontificate. He actually brought the devotion to Argentina when he became its bishop.
